I am sure many, if not all of you, have seen the horrible images related to plastic straws and our oceans…I’ll spare you the image. Let’s be real, I LOVE straws, so that’s why it was a no brainer to make plastic straws my first switch to a more sustainable solution. I bought bamboo straws from Amazon because let’s be honest, it ships directly to you and I wanted them quick…there are way more sustainable ways to get these bamboo straws, but I was new to the game and I’m not perfect.
These were the ones I bought because they came in a cute bag and with a straw cleaner.
NOW, main reason I chose bamboo was because it’s environmentally friendly, bamboo grows like crazy, and also I can compost it once the straw has reached its end of life.
There are so many options out there now….stainless steel, glass, paper(not a fan, however it’s not plastic), bamboo, and many more. OR you can just skip the straw all together.
If you are just starting your journey, I highly suggest this is one of the first changes you make because it is so simple and easy. Let me know which straws you use or if you skip the straw in general. -SJ

I have tried a few, including hay straws, which are fine, and sustainable, but very thin and flimsy–especially if used in hot drinks. I have been just opting out of straw usage, more than anything. I do like paper straws, but they need to find a sustainable way to properly wax coat them or something similar, to avoid the soggy mess that they become.
